Gas or electric patio heater: which should I choose?
Gas wins for raw output over a big open or exposed area, and it works where there is no power. It runs at full output only, needs clearance overhead, and a licensed gas fitter to connect it. Electric wins where there is no gas line, where you want to dim the heat, or where you want a recessed ceiling install. If you have a gas line and a larger space to warm, the Platinum Gas is the designed way to do it.
How much area does the Platinum 500 Gas heat?
Up to 215 sq ft of directional radiant coverage from one unit, at 39,800 BTU. Coverage drops if the heater is mounted high or the space is windy, so on a big or exposed patio plan for more than one unit. Send us the dimensions and we will size it with you.
Does a Platinum Gas heater work in the wind?
Better than most. It is rated to keep performing in wind up to 12 mph, ahead of the Tungsten Gas at 8 mph, because the glass front shields the burner. Two honest caveats on any gas heater: wind chill still pulls warmth off your skin, and a strong enough gust can blow out a pilot. On a permanently exposed site, electric is the more reliable choice.
Natural gas or propane, and who installs it?
Both are available and produce the same output. Natural gas costs less to run and never needs refilling but ties you to a fixed line. Propane works anywhere with no line. Either way, a licensed gas fitter in your province must make the connection.
How high should a gas patio heater be mounted?
Between 8 and 10 feet above the finished floor. Higher than that and the heat spreads too thin before it reaches anyone at seated height. Under a low pergola or wood ceiling, a heat deflector lowers the required clearance and pushes heat downward. Keep the clearances in the manual.
Can I dim a Platinum Gas heater?
No. Gas heaters run at full output, so control is on and off only, with an Affinity On/Off controller or a wireless remote. If variable output matters to you, look at the Platinum Electric, which dims in 1 percent steps.
What is the best gas patio heater for a covered but open patio?
For a covered patio that is still open on the sides, gas is ideal and the Platinum Gas is the design-led pick, with a slimline face built to be seen. If your patio is screened or enclosed, gas is ruled out and you would want electric or the Eclipse instead. Tungsten Gas or Platinum Gas, which should I pick?
Both are gas. Tungsten gives the most heat per dollar. Platinum is the premium, better-looking unit for a design-led space. Same fuel, different priorities, so it is a budget and aesthetics call.
