How radiant heat actually works
A standard mushroom heater warms the air around it. That air rises, and most of it goes straight past you. Radiant infrared works like sunshine instead. It warms the people, chairs and floor in its path, and skips the air in between.
The practical difference is reach. This unit throws heat about 16 feet into open space with a 13 foot spread, and covers up to 215 sq ft. A typical mushroom heater covers about 75 sq ft, and only if everyone crowds around the pole.
Because infrared does not rely on moving air, a breeze cannot blow the heat away the way it empties a mushroom heater. The mesh and cover shield the flame and filter the wind, and the unit is rated to 8 mph.
Safe by design
A built-in flame failure device shuts the gas off automatically if the flame goes out. The anti-tilt base keeps it planted on uneven surfaces. Push-button ignition, same as your BBQ.
Outdoor use, or a well ventilated covered space. Not for indoor use.
Propane or natural gas
Propane runs off a tank hidden in the base, so the heater goes anywhere on the property. A 20 lb tank gives you around 9 hours at moderate output. The base also takes a 30 lb tank if you want longer runtime between fills.
Natural gas ships with a 6 foot hose and connects to your existing line. It still rolls around the patio, but it stays within 6 feet of the hookup. Have a licensed gas fitter make the connection.
Both versions produce identical heat. The only difference is where you can take it.
Heat deflector included
The deflector assembly ships in the box, no extra purchase. It pushes heat downward for better coverage and protects what is overhead, which matters under a pergola or a cedar ceiling.

Questions before you buy
- How is this different from the mushroom heater I can buy at a big box store? Two different technologies. A mushroom heater burns gas to warm the air, and that warm air rises, so a large share of the heat goes over your head instead of into the people sitting down. It also emits in a sphere, which is why everyone has to crowd the pole to feel it. The Tungsten Portable heats a ceramic element and projects infrared heat directionally, so it warms people and surfaces the way sun does. That means around 215 sq ft of useful coverage against roughly 75 sq ft for a mushroom, about 16 feet of reach with a 13 foot spread, and heat that still works in an 8 mph wind. You are also buying a 304-grade stainless unit with a weighted anti-tilt base rather than a lightweight tower that blows over.
- Does it work in the wind? Yes, and the honest answer has two parts. The heat itself is unaffected. Infrared travels as energy, not as warm air, so a breeze cannot carry it away. The unit is rated to 8 mph and the mesh and cover shield the flame. What wind does affect is you. Wind chill pulls heat off your skin faster than any heater replaces it, the same way a sunny day feels colder the moment the wind picks up. On a genuinely exposed site, blocking the wind with glass, a solid railing or planting will do more for comfort than adding heater capacity. A strong enough gust can also blow out a gas pilot on any gas heater, so if wind is constant where you are, an electric model is the more reliable choice.
- How long does a tank last? Around 9 hours on a 20 lb tank at moderate output. Less at full output, longer if you run it lower. A 30 lb tank also fits the base.
- How much space does it heat? Up to 215 sq ft of radiant coverage, enough for a generous deck or a covered patio area.
- Can I use it under a pergola or wood ceiling? Yes. The included deflector redirects heat downward. Keep 3 ft of clearance above.
- Does it need installation? Not on propane. The natural gas version should be connected by a licensed gas fitter.
- Can I store it over winter? Yes. The top separates from the base for easier storage.
- What does shipping cost? Nothing. This heater ships free anywhere in Canada.
