Monnit vs Swift Sensors: Which Wireless Monitoring System Fits Your Property?
Two systems on the market both call themselves wireless monitoring, and both genuinely are. The real question is which wireless architecture fits your property.
The Short Answer
Swift Sensors is built primarily for facility managers watching equipment inside one building, though it holds up well anywhere sensor density matters more than distance. Monnit serves both industrial and commercial facilities and multi-building residential properties, with a longer-range wireless architecture. If your property spans more than one structure, or needs cellular coverage where wired internet isn't available, Monnit's range is usually the better starting point. If everything you're monitoring sits in one room or building with a high sensor count, Swift Sensors is worth a look too.
Range Is the Real Difference
Swift Sensors uses Bluetooth 5 (BLE5), generally rated to 500 feet depending on facility infrastructure and what sits between the sensor and gateway. BLE5 transmits through ordinary doors and walls built from standard materials, it isn't limited to a clear line of sight.
Monnit uses long range RF instead. The standard ALTA gateway reaches sensors over 1,200 feet through more than a dozen walls, non line of sight. The extended range ALTA XL gateway pushes past 2,000 feet through 18 or more walls. For a shop, a well house, and a main residence on the same property, that longer range often means one gateway can cover more ground, though a large enough property may still need additional gateways to cover separated structures under either system.
Gateway Capacity
Worth stating plainly, because it's a real advantage for Swift Sensors: its gateway supports up to 150 sensors, compared to up to 100 on a standard Monnit ALTA gateway. For a single building with a high sensor count, that's a genuine edge.
Cellular Coverage
Monnit's current cellular gateways support LTE Cat-M1/NB-IoT across a broad set of bands, a strong technical spec. But actual carrier and service availability in your specific location still needs confirming, cellular coverage depends on compatible service being available where the gateway is installed. We confirm cellular coverage for your postal code before any cellular unit ships, the same standard we hold for every cellular Protect bundle we sell.
Monitoring Cost
Monnit offers a free iMonnit Basic subscription for standard cloud monitoring. The paid Premiere tier adds shorter minimum Heartbeat intervals, advanced sensor configuration, multiple users, and longer data history, starting at $45 USD a year for up to 6 sensors, $70 for up to 12, and $120 for up to 25.
Swift Sensors requires a paid monitoring plan priced according to the number of sensors deployed, so recurring cost increases as sensors are added. We'd confirm current pricing directly with Swift before quoting an exact figure.
Where Swift Sensors Wins
Swift Sensors is a strong pick for a single room or building with a high sensor count, commercial kitchens, server closets, and similar tight spaces where its 30 plus sensor types and higher per-gateway capacity cover the job well.
Bottom Line
Swift Sensors leans toward single-building, higher-density installs. Monnit's longer range and cellular options make it a strong fit for multi-building properties like cabins, acreages, and rural sites, on top of the industrial and commercial facilities it also serves. Match the system to the shape of your property, not just the brand name.
